Cooldrums.ca will inspire drummers to develop an original style and modern technique by learning to play cool beats on the drums.

Welcome to Cooldrums.ca. Over the coming months, this site will be transformed into a video based website that will inspire drummers to develop original style and modern technique on the drums. The ultimate aim is to help drummers find new ways to express themselves and achieve their full potential on the instrument. Using 2-minute video examples, drummer Joe MacKay will break down grooves and highlight the unique aspects of its structure. Drummers can then take the information back their practice rooms and use it to create their own musical ideas.

Joe got his first set of drums when he was six years old. In grade seven, he played in the junior high band and stayed interested in music throughout high school. After several years of private instruction atAlberta College, he went on to play in an Edmonton band called Vicinity. The group received airplay and won a local talent search in1984. Joe returned to college to study percussion, marimba and piano. After a year he began working in local rock bands including The Next Big Thing, Dr. Plaid, Swarm and Radioflyer – which won several talent contests for original music. In his spare time he began composing music for corporate videos and teaching private drum lessons in St. Albert.

Recently Joe has played with a number of artists including Bella Rouge, The Geris Project and country pop artist Kimberly Spears. Joe studied percussion with Brian Jones of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 2010 and 2011 and is now shifting his attention to helping drummers improve their playing through online education.
